People dressed as Kanwadias will be prohibited from entering tourist spots like Mussoorie to maintain proper traffic management and law and order during Kanwad Yatra. They will be restricted to their usual paths to ensure a smooth and organised pilgrimage, the inspector general of police of the Garhwal region KS Nagnyal said. He stated that the Kanwad Yatra is expected to commence from July 22 and the Uttarakhand police have made all the necessary arrangements in this regard. “We have received eight paramilitary companies from the Centre to ensure proper security arrangements during Kanwad Yatra in Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri and Pauri districts. The police will deploy these paramilitary companies and over 6,000 police personnel for security purposes and to maintain harmony, law and order. Since the intensity of Kanwadias is usually higher in the Haridwar district, these eight paramilitary companies along with 13 companies of provincial armed constabulary (PAC) of the State will be deployed there,” the IG said. He informed that Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri and Pauri districts have been divided into 21 superzones and 166 sectors. Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri and Pauri have been divided into 36, five, six and seven zones respectively. The police have also identified parking spaces in all four districts including 13 parking areas in Haridwar that can hold about one lakh two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles. The Haridwar police will also paste QR codes through which Kanwadias can know about the updated information about available parking spaces near them. Nagnyal said that all Kanwad committees have also been instructed to ensure they do not carry Kanwad taller than 12 feet which is the maximum prescribed limit. The police personnel have also been deployed at sites where Kanwads are prepared. He also informed that the police personnel of Uttarakhand will also be present in the control room of Meerut police in Uttar Pradesh to provide updated information about the entry of Kanwadias. Besides CCTVs, the police will also keep surveillance through drones in all four districts. “We will divert traffic on July 28 as per our current plan but it can be done early too as per the requirement,” Nagnyal said.
