The police on Wednesday seized 58 kilogrammes of Ganja along with a car without a number plate and an electronic weighing scale from a gang including two men, two teenagers and a woman. They used to allegedly send the drug in small packets to youngsters and self-proclaimed babas and beggars at higher prices. All accused belong to Haridwar district and have been identified as Deepak Kumar (34) and his wife Pooja Devi (32), Sunil Arya (28), Istkar (19) and Riyaz (19), said the senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh. He said that during the checking under Raiwala police station area late on Tuesday, a suspicious car without a number plate was seen coming from Haridwar which was signalled to stop for checking but the driver accelerated the car to escape.

However, the police surrounded the car and caught the driver. He could not give a satisfactory response when the police asked him about the reason for attempted escape. The police then checked the car after finding the driver suspicious and found 58 kilogrammes of Ganja. The SSP said that the accused revealed during interrogation that they usually buy Ganja from a man from Muzaffarnagar named Aamir at the rate of Rs 10,000 per kilogramme.

According to them, they sell the Ganja in small packets to self-proclaimed babas, beggars and young people at the rate of Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 at places like Har Ki Paidi, Rishikesh, Muni Ki Reti and Raiwala besides other nearby places, said Singh. “They all divide the profits among themselves. They had also bought this car from the money earned by selling Ganja which they were using to smuggle drugs. The police have registered a case against them at Raiwala police station under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The teams are searching for the accused Amir,” he added.
