Police seize illegal liquor, drugs worth Rs 6 crore after announcement of ULB polls

Since the announcement of urban local bodies elections in Uttarakhand, the police have seized illegal alcohol and drugs worth Rs six crore since December 24. The Inspector General (Law and Order) and nodal officer for ULB elections Nilesh Anand Bharne said that the police have carried out substantial seizures of illegal substances and conducted preventive actions to ensure smooth elections from December 24 till January 1.
He informed that consistent checks across all districts of the State between December 24, 2024 and January 1, 2025 have led to the confiscation of 3,700 litres of illegal liquor worth about Rs 15 lakh and 187 kilogrammes of illegal drugs worth about Rs five crore. He said that this shows a significant achievement by the police in maintaining law and order in the State. These efforts are part of a broader strategy of the police to curb illicit activities and ensure that the elections are conducted in a fair and peaceful environment, Bharne said.
He also informed that apart from the seizures, the police have also been taking proactive measures under Sections 126 and 135 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Act. According to him, the police have filed charges in 405 cases, involving 2,400 individuals. The police have also identified and restrained 174 anti-social elements who could pose a potential threat to peace during the elections. Bharne said that the police are taking all possible measures to ensure a secure and transparent electoral process. The police will leave no stone unturned to prevent any activities that could disrupt public order during this crucial period, he added.
