The Dehradun police will act under the National Security Act (NSA) against those who are deliberately trying to disrupt harmony, law and order by sharing misleading news and objectionable posts on social media. The police have so far registered 21 cases against persons posting such content in the past six months, said the senior superintendent of police of Dehradun Daleep Singh Kunwar. He said that police are very serious and sensitive to these issues and people who try to disturb communal harmony through social media are constantly being monitored by the police. He said that out of 21 registered cases, 11 cases are related to broadcasting misleading statements and videos reportedly disturbing communal harmony and the police have imposed charges on these accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act. He said that the police are also taking action against culprits under the Goonda Act. He said, “The police observed that some misleading and objectionable videos and news were being posted on social media by some anarchic elements trying to disturb the social harmony of the district. Our teams are keeping a vigilant eye on such sensitive issues on social media since the commencement of the year. We are taking appropriate action against them and if needed, we will act under NSA against those intentionally trying to disturb law and order and cause communal tension. All measures are being taken to prevent any kind of actions that can affect peace and harmony here.” He also appealed to the public to neither pay attention to such misleading objectionable posts nor share it on social media platforms without thinking. “Think before uploading and sharing any post on social media platforms or one can get punishment under relevant acts,” added SSP.
