The chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) Kusum Kandwal has directed the Dehradun police to conduct verification drive in the residential and working areas of individuals from outside the State. This direction was issued by the USCW chief after hearing of a recent incident in the Sahaspur area of Dehradun district, wherein a young man allegedly raped a minor girl who subsequently became pregnant.  Kandwal informed that she had talked to the superintendent of police (Rural) about the said incident to gather further details. She said that the police informed that the accused individual was already in contact with the minor and after the rape, he administered medication to abort the pregnancy. However, on January 3, the 15-year-old girl’s health deteriorated after consuming the medicine, leading her family to take her to the hospital.  After the doctors examined her, it was ascertained that she had been sexually assaulted which had resulted in the pregnancy. He had administered abortion medication to terminate the pregnancy which resulted in the deterioration of her health, she added.

She further informed that upon inquiring about the investigation, the police informed her that after conducting an investigation and gathering information about the case, it was discovered that the young man had repeatedly assaulted the minor, using threats as leverage. In response to the victim’s father’s complaint, the police have filed charges against the offender under various sections of POCSO and IPC. He is currently being held in judicial custody, she said.

Kandwal stated that she instructed the police to take stringent action against the accused. Further, she instructed the Dehradun police to conduct regular checks and verifications in areas where people from outside are residing or working. These steps should be taken consistently so that outsiders do not commit any criminal activities, she added.
