Uttarakhand Police has trained over 200 police personnel for the efficient operation of drones since the establishment of the drone lab last year on July 3. The State police adopted drone technology to ensure better traffic management, crowd management, security and surveillance across the State which can be used as per the requirement. The technology will be used this year to maintain law and order during Kanwad Yatra too, said the director general of police, Ashok Kumar. He said that the police presently have 40 members working in the drone team at the district level with two certified pilots and master trainers belonging to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). More than 200 police personnel have been trained by drone experts since July 2022 in which they learned about drone handling and repairing, and drone forensics along with rules and regulations regarding drones’ operation. He said that the police have also issued a considerable number of e-challans for traffic violations via these drones in the past year. He said the drone team also helped the police immensely during natural calamities across the State. The drone team also provided a live feed of natural disasters in the Maldevta area of Dehradun and Joshimath to the command and control team. It helped the authorities in mapping the disaster-prone areas too, added Kumar. He said that the drone team is using Skye UTM which is an advanced aerial traffic management system for unmanned aircraft traffic management. This helps the police to keep an eye on all the drone activities. The police also conduct awareness campaigns for all drone operators in the State regarding associated rules and regulations. He said that the police are also going to use drone services for traffic management, crowd management besides for mapping, security and surveillance during Kanwad Yatra this year.
