A day before the polling for the crucial assembly by-election of Champawat, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami hit the road by riding a motorcycle on Monday. He conducted door to door campaigning in Champawat during the day. Before embarking on the campaign on the motorcycle he sipped a cup of tea at Mahadev tea stall at Jagannath Chauraha. The BJP leader Kailash Gehtodi who had vacated his Champawat seat for the CM rode pillion on the bike with the CM Dhami. At some places Gehodi took the driver’s seat with Dhami sitting behind him.
The voting for the by-election in Champawat would start at 7 AM and would end at 7 PM. The ruling BJP and CM Dhami have thrown their full might to ensure that he wins the seat by a record margin.
The Congress party has fielded Nirmala Gehtodi as its candidate from Champawat. She is facing an uphill task since CM Dhami is the BJP candidate from the seat. Gehtodi on her part has consistently accused the BJP and CM Dhami for misusing the official machinery.
Champawat assembly constituency has a total of 96,213 voters out of which 50,171 are male and 46,042 are female voters. There are 151 polling booths in the constituency. In the assembly elections of 2017 and 2022 Kailash Gehtodi of BJP has won from the seat. In 2002 and 2012 Himesh Kharkwal of Congress had represented the constituency in the state assembly while in the year 2007, Meena Mahrana of BJP had won from here.
In the recently held assembly elections, CM Dhami was defeated by Bhuwan Kapdi of Congress from his traditional Khatima assembly constituency. Despite the reversal in Khatima, the ruling BJP came back to power in Uttarakhand and the central leadership of BJP reposed faith in Dhami for the second consecutive time. In order to fulfil the constitutional obligation of getting elected to the assembly within six months, BJP MLA Kailash Gehtodi resigned from his assembly membership.
In view of the crowds CM Dhami and BJP leaders are drawing in Champawat Dhami is poised to register a victory. His victory would give Champawat a status of VIP constituency and this factor is helping Dhami’s cause.
