The vice president of Uttarakhand Congress and party spokesman Dhirendra Pratap has criticised the Uttarakhand government’s plan to rename Lansdowne cantonment board after the late Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat.

In a recent programme held in Pauri, the Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj had given the proposal which was endorsed by the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

Terming the decision as anti people, Pratap said that it is against the will, wish and aspirations of the local people.

While demanding a referendum on this issue he said that nobody is supreme in a democracy.  He said people are supreme in democracy and therefore they should be taken into confidence. While praising the services of General Rawat as a great soldier, Pratap said the state government is already installing a statue of the late general in Dehradun and some other memorials are on the anvil in different parts of the country.

“There is no need to change the name of Lansdowne which is popular among the local people and is a renowned place among the tourist destinations of India,” he said.
