Price of onions unlikely to drop before Diwali

While the prices of many highly consumed vegetables continue to skyrocket in Dehradun market during the festive season, the president of Dehradun Mandi Samiti, Rajesh Sharma stated that there are very less chances of the prices coming down before Diwali.

For the last few weeks, there has been a considerable hike in the prices of vegetables including onion, tomato and potato which are consumed regularly in almost every household of Dehradun. Among these, the prices of onions has increased from Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kilogramme within 15 to 20 days as they are currently being sold at the rate ranging from Rs 70 to Rs 80 per kilogramme by the local vendors. Sharma said that due to heavy rainfall in Nashik in Maharashtra which is the main supplier of onions to Dehradun, only about 60 per cent to 70 per cent of delayed onion supply is arriving in the Mandi. The rate of potato has also increased in the last few weeks due to the insufficient supply of potatoes from the mountain regions of the State. Sharma said that though all the efforts are being made to meet the demand for vegetables at the appropriate rates, the possibility is that the prices of highly consumed vegetables like onions will not drop before Diwali.
