Private docs boycott OPDs for 12 hrs on Friday
They are against the union government’s decision to allow Ayurveda practitioners to perform surgical procedures.
The OPD boycott by the private allopathic doctors affected the health services on Friday. The doctors boycotted work from 6 am to 6 pm on the day on the call given by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) against the union government’s decision to allow Ayurveda practitioners to perform surgical procedures. The patient load on OPDs of government hospitals increased as the private doctors were on strike. However OPDs of major private hospitals remained open.
The general secretary of the Uttarakhand chapter of IMA, Dr D D Chaudhury claimed that the OPD boycott call was a success. He said that more than 2500 doctors boycotted the OPDs in hospitals, clinics and nursing homes.
He said that the government should reconsider its decision and it should have taken IMA into confidence before taking the decision. The IMA secretary added that the Supreme Court in one its decision had stated that allopathic doctors cannot give Ayurveda medicines so the reverse of it should also be true. The IMA claims that the government is promoting mixopathy which is unethical.
In a recent order, the regulator of Ayurveda study and practice in the country, the Central Council of Indian Medicines (CCIM) has allowed post graduate degree holders of Ayurveda to perform a variety of surgical procedures.
