The sexual harassment committee at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) has started investigation into an alleged incident of a male nurse pestering a female MBBS intern by inappropriate acts and gestures. Informing this, the deputy medical superintendent at the hospital Dr N S Bisht said that the victim had recently written to the principal, Dr Geeta Jain. In her correspondence, the victim is learnt to have claimed that a male nursing officer, who works with her, has been secretly observing her from outside her room. Further, as per her allegation, the accused sent her inappropriate messages and also physically touched her. She also stated in the letter that she was feeling uncomfortable and insecure within the hospital premises due to these unwanted acts.
Bisht said that acting on the complaint, the hospital administration had referred this matter to the sexual harassment committee for a thorough investigation. “The investigation has started and if the allegation is found to have substances the hospital administration will take stringent action and (FIR) would also be filed against the accused,” he added.
Regarding the safety of doctors and patients, particularly women within the hospital, Bisht emphasised that the hospital administration has taken proactive measures to ensure security of doctors, patients and staff. “Surveillance cameras have already been installed and additional cameras are currently being installed now,” he said.
“The dark areas of the premises have been illuminated and a security guard has been assigned to each entrance. Further, the sexual harassment committee is active, too,” he said, adding that they were laying stress on gender sensitisation within the hospital so as to ensure healthy collaboration between the female and male staff.
