Process to select new DGP commences in Uttarakhand

The selection process for the new director general of police (DGP) has commenced in Uttarakhand. The current DGP Ashok Kumar is expected to retire on November 30 and the new 12th DGP will be selected from the panel of three IPS officers as per the norms. These three officers are the additional director general (ADG) of police Deepam Seth, ADG PVK Prasad and ADG Abhinav Kumar who are among the senior most IPS officers in the State at present. As per the officials, the police headquarters has sent these names to the State government which will send them to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for selection of the new DGP. The UPSC will start the selection process in November. A meeting will be held in November for the selection of the new DGP which will be joined by the UPSC chairman Manoj Soni along with the Home Secretary of the central government and the DG of one of the Central Armed Forces besides the chief secretary and DGP of Uttarakhand, as per the officials. According to the officials, it was required for an IPS officer to serve for at least 30 years to be eligible for the DGP post as per the norms. Since many states were not in a position of fulfilling this requirement, UPSC recently changed this requirement from 30 to 25 years. ADG Deepam Seth is an IPS officer of the 1995 batch and had served in various districts of Uttar Pradesh before the formation of Uttarakhand. He has served as the SSP of many districts in the State. He has also held positions of in-charge of Garhwal range and inspector general of law and order at the Police Headquarters. He is presently on deputation in Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). ADG PVK Prasad is also an IPS officer of the 1995 batch who is currently serving as ADG PAC. He has also served as SSP in many districts including Dehradun and held the position of IG Intelligence. He was also the first IPS officer to be IG Jail in 2014. The third candidate to be the next DGP is ADG Abhinav Kumar, an IPS officer of the 1996 batch as well. He is presently serving as Special Secretary to the Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and ADG Security and Intelligence. He has also served as SSP of many districts like Dehradun and Haridwar besides holding the post of IG Garhwal range.
