It is a matter of pride for the nation that its brave soldiers displayed exemplary courage to defeat the enemy despite tough geographical conditions. The governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh said this after paying tributes to the Kargil war martyrs at the martyrs’ memorial in the sub area cantonment here on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas on Tuesday. He said that the real tribute to the martyrs will be to provide all possible assistance to their families and widows. The governor recalled that 527 brave soldiers of India had sacrificed their lives in Kargil, out of which 75 jawans were from Uttarakhand. Stating that these martyrs are the icons of the nation, he said that inspired by their love for the nation the other soldiers are discharging their duty in the security of the nation. Singh said that while serving in the army, he had seen the Kargil area closely, adding that it is necessary for soldiers to have morale and enthusiasm in such a place. Stating that the soldiers of Uttarakhand also made a big contribution to the Vijay Diwas, he said that 37 of these soldiers were gallantry award medal winners. “The saga of the brave soldiers in Kargil inspires all to love the nation. The Indian army is the best army in the world which is capable of facing any challenge,” said the governor. The Uttarakhand sub-area general officer commanding, major general Sanjeev Khatri, officers of the Uttarakhand sub-area, station commanders of all brigades and ex-servicemen were also present on the occasion.
