Four major projects set to transform public transport in three cities
Projects being undertaken by the Uttarakhand Metro Rail, Urban Infrastructure and Buildings Construction Corporation Limited will drastically change the Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun regions in the coming years. Tenders for one of these projects, the Personalised Rapid Transit (PRT) system in Haridwar are slated to be opened on June 1 after which six months will be taken for financial closure. The construction period of the 21 kilometre long PRT system is two years after financial closure. The corporation’s managing director Jitendra Tyagi said this while informing the media about the major projects being undertaken by the corporation.
Tyagi said that the corporation is working on the Haridwar PRT, Har Ki Paidi to Chandi Devi ropeway, Rishikesh-Neelkanth ropeway and the Dehradun metro neo project. The metro neo project is pending final approval from the Centre. He informed that the Haridwar PRT to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 1,330 crore will have 21 stations. The daily ridership in 2026-27 is estimated to be 1.27 lakh which is estimated to rise to 2.67 lakh in 2051-52. The project will include 514 pods with each driverless battery operated pod capable of carrying four to six passengers. The fares will range from Rs 20 for zero to two kilometres to Rs 90 for more than 14 kilometres. The rates will be slightly higher during Mela days ranging from Rs 25 to Rs 115. The Har Ki Paidi- Chandi Devi ropeway is estimated to be built at a cost of Rs 160.80 crore. The 2.3 kilometre long ropeway will have 13 towers and the daily ridership in 2025 is estimated to be 5,346 which is expected to increase to 11,735 in 2051. The ropeway will comprise of 90 cabins with each capable of carrying upto six persons on the trip which will take about nine minutes one way. The tenders for this project are slated to be opened on July 5 after which six months will be taken for financial closure and the construction period is two years after that.
The fare for the ropeway will be Rs 155 for one way and Rs 280 for a two-way ticket. He further informed that Rishikesh-Neelkanth ropeway is to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 465.69 crore. The 6.485 kilometre long ropeway will have four stations and 36 towers. It will connect ISBT to Neelkanth Mahadev temple and the Parvati temple further ahead. The daily ridership of this ropeway is estimated to be 8,391 in 20217 and expected to increase to 22,977 in 2053. It will comprise 143 cabins with each capable of carrying 10 persons. The Dehradun metro neo project will comprise two corridors- ISBT to Gandhi Park and from the Forest Research Institute to Raipur, totaling to 25 kilometres in length. The estimated project cost is Rs 1,662 crore. There will be 25 stations and the depot will be built in the Raipur area. The average daily ridership in operation year 2026-27 is expected to be 1,80,894 which is expected to increase to 3,13,970 in 2053-54. The metro neo design speed is 70 kmph though its average speed will be 20 to 25 kmph, said Tyagi.
