Pursue research in astronomy- Kasturirangan to students
Former chairman of ISRO addresses a webinar organised by Doon University on National Science Day

Eminent space scientist and former chairman of Indian Research Space Organisation (ISRO), K Kasturirangan has called upon the students to pursue research in astronomy and said that the time has come for India to move towards becoming one of the leaders in the field.
He made this comment while presenting an interesting account of latest innovations in the field of Astronomy and Astrophysics during a webinar organised by the Doon University on Monday. The webinar was organised under the Research and Innovation Cell of Doon University on the occasion of National Science Day. The renowned scientist and recipient of Padma Vibhushan said that to know about astro science and physics can be very interesting and the latest example of this is the launching of the James Webb Telescope which has the capability to reach farthest in the universe or can view the initiation of Big Bang. He informed that this telescope connects Physics, Biology and Chemistry in an extraordinary way and which are congruous with modern engineering and technological requirements. Informing about the mega projects of India on Astronomy which include 30 Meter telescope and LIGO for finding Square Km array and gravitational waves, Kasturirangan said that on one hand they represent the latest technological and engineering challenges and on the other they search the limit of sciences in different dimensions.
“Astronomy in the 21st century is going to mark a very important phase in human history,” he professed.
In the webinar Kasturirangan satisfied many queries of the students.
Speaking on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor (VC) of Doon University Surekha Dangwal said that it is a matter of great pride that the former chairman of ISRO who was the chairman of the National Education Policy is among the students and faculty members of Doon University. She said that science is the foundation stone of every development and the power of science would propel India as a world power. The Webinar was organised in a hybrid mode and was attended by more than 500 participants.
In the second part of the webinar Kasturirangan released a brochure on the upcoming International convention on women empowerment in Doon University. Informing about it the VC said that the convention would be organised in the first and second week of April and said that the objective of the convention is to view Indian Women from Indian perspective and not with the prevalent one where it is seen in the western world.
The participants included Director of Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) Dehradun Anjan Ray, former founder director IIT Roorkee Prem Vrat, founder of Sulabh International Bindeshwari Pathak, many senior scientists, teachers and students.
The programme was coordinated by the university’s dean of student welfare, HC Purohit.
