After several students protested over an alleged ragging incident in Selaqui situated Doon Business School late on Tuesday, the police registered a case against about 200 unknown students for rebellion, obstruction in government work and attacking the police team. The students were purportedly protesting after a ragging video of a student went viral on social media.

In the video which was allegedly released by the victim, he was made to sit on the floor of a room where some young men, who are allegedly senior students, can be seen hitting and kicking him. The victim could be seen crying, pleading and following the orders of the senior students, as claimed by the victim in the video. The victim also showed injury marks on his body to show how brutally he was hurt. He claimed in the video that rather than taking strict action against the offenders, the college administration suspended him for 21 days despite being the victim. His bullies were given only a 30-day suspension in the name of punishment.

This video went viral on Tuesday that agitated several students and many protested regarding the same late at night. According to the senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh, the police on Tuesday night received information of vandalism and assault by students in Doon Business School. A police team was immediately sent to the spot and observed that about 150 to 200 students gathered in the college premises were vandalising the property.

The police tried to pacify the situation but they tried to attack police personnel as well. The situation came under control after more police force was called at the spot from nearby police stations, claimed Singh. He said that the college administration has told the police during questioning that there was some argument and fight between students of second and third year of BBA a few days ago. “They claimed that an internal committee was formed to investigate the matter and verify the claims of ragging. The administration also temporarily suspended students involved in the issue for a few days. They said that when students watched the viral video, they got agitated and indulged in vandalism and violence,” said SSP.

He said that the police will investigate the students visible in the viral video besides the involvement of the college administration in the matter. “The police will hold a meeting with the administrators of all education institutes to ensure such a situation does not occur in future. Ensuring the safety of students on premises and maintaining discipline is the college administration’s duty. If there is something serious, the police must be informed about such incidents to take preventive measures,” he added.
