Two women and a 10-days old child died after a house collapsed in a slum located in Kath Bungalow in the Rajpur area of Dehradun on early Monday morning due to incessant rainfall. The State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) started conducting the search and rescue operation and recovered the bodies of 22-year-old Sangeeta and her 10-days old baby and Lakshmi, 28-year-old sister-in-law of Sangeeta. The police said that the bodies were sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya hospital (Coronation) for post-mortem before handing over the bodies to the families.
Even as the authorities continue to find dead bodies and body parts of people who went missing after a flash flood and landslide triggered by a cloudburst on August 19 in Dehradun and the nearby areas, the incessant rain continues to wreak havoc in different parts of Uttarakhand. Considering the incessant rainfall for the past 24 hours, the Dehradun district magistrate Sonika along with the officials concerned inspected the Soda Saroli Bridge near Maldevta on Monday morning which was severely affected by a cloudburst on August 19. She gave necessary directions to the officials to ensure the safety of the bridge and passengers using it. The Raipur MLA Umesh Sharma ‘Kau’ was also present during this inspection. The DM also inspected the disaster affected area of Maldevta and directed to shift animals and cattle to safer places with the help of SDRF from the places that might get waterlogged after a heavy rainfall. She said that the disaster management teams have been working round-the-clock to conduct relief and rescue operations as per the requirement. Many people have also observed incidents of vehicles being swayed in Rispana River and many locals are also allegedly missing. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a yellow alert in Uttarakhand, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall till Tuesday and as per the officials, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and SDRF have been directed to stay alerted to deal with the possibility of any natural calamity. The DM also said that the officials concerned have been directed to take all the possible measures to conduct search operations across the district as per the requirement.
Meanwhile, a review meeting was held regarding the relief and rescue work across the district by the DM in association with Raipur MLA. He said to the officials to work efficiently in providing basic facilities like proper roads, drinking water, electricity supply, health, food grains and ration among other necessary requirements. He asked the officials of all the departments concerned to expedite the reconstruction and other work after assessing the damages related to their department properly to avoid any kind of inconvenience to the people of the affected area. The additional district magistrate (administration) Shiv Kumar Barnwal, chief medical officer (CMO) Dr Manoj Kumar Upreti and district disaster management officer (DDMO) Deepshikha Rawat among others were also present in the meeting.
