Rain fury hits Kotdwar, Lansdowne areas

The heavy rains that pounded the Kotdwar, Lansdowne and Yamkeshwar areas in Pauri district resulted in widespread damage of property.  The regional meteorological centre recorded 279 mm rain in Kotdwar tehsil on Tuesday. A part of the suspension bridge at Gadighat caved in due to the torrential rain. Besides, houses of at least ten families are learnt to have collapsed due to the rain.  As the house of one   Rahmat Ali of the village Chunna Mahera of Patti Ajmer Malla in Kotdwar Tehsil collapsed, one person is believed to have been buried under the debris. The rescue operation is on.

The Kotdwar- Dugadda national highway was closed for vehicular movement in the wake of massive landslides that damaged a significant stretch of the highway. It is further learnt that as many as 26 PWD roads were closed for transportation due to rain-triggered landslides in different parts of the district. Besides, several cows and goats were buried under debris as four cattle shelters in village Kandi under Yamkeshwar block collapsed in the wake of heavy rain.

While four persons died in a road accident in Lansdowne on Tuesday night the SDRF team, assisted by Kotdwar police, rescued on the same day 22 persons found stranded on the bridge of the swollen Malan river. It is learnt that the rain changed the course of this river.   

On being informed of the rain ravaging Pauri district, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami assured that all kinds of assistance would be given to the affected families.
