Rains bring respite to people reeling under heat wave in U’khand

Thursday, 20 June 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Shower of rain finally came to heat-scorched Dehradun and other areas of Uttarakhand on Wednesday afternoon, causing the mercury to fall by several notches to the immense relief of the people. Dehradun like many other parts of the State kept baking with heatwave sweeping across and the mercury hovering around in the neighbourhood of 43 degrees Celsius.  As per the regional meteorological centre’s forecast, the current rain spell-dubbed as pre-monsoon shower- is likely to continue till Thursday.

The spell of rain on Wednesday was accompanied by strong gusty winds in many districts of the State. The reports of uprooting of trees are coming from many parts of the State.

Notably, the weather department had issued orange alert for torrential rain and gusty winds across the State for Wednesday.

In the past week, Uttarakhand recorded surging mercury with both the mountainous and plains areas recording temperatures far above the normal marks. This time, the hill stations were gulped too by the searing heat, leaving tourists who thronged them to get respite from the blistering heat singing the plains greatly disappointed.  The tourist-favourite hill stations like Mussoorie and Nainital kept suffering from the heat predicament.

However, Wednesday’s rain spell has brought the much-needed relief   to the people across the State. Besides, the rain will also help in dousing forest fire in many mountainous areas of the State.
