The annual Vasantotsav will be held this year from March 1 to 3 at the Raj Bhawan. Addressing officials in a meeting on Tuesday, the governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh said that the event should be organised with enthusiasm as a festival in which the participation of as many people as possible should also be ensured. He said that it should not be limited to a government event and that private partnership should also be encouraged while also connecting the general public with it. He directed officials to properly publicise the Vasantotsav while adding that efforts should also be made to take it from the local to the global level.
The governor said that floriculture in the State should be encouraged through Vasantotsav. He said that it is important to link the floral exhibition with commercial activities. The flowers here need to be marketed not only in the State but across the nation as well. This event should be established as a platform for cultivators in remote areas of flowers, herbs, aromatic plants and other organic produce. He directed officials that along with IHM and GMVN, women self help groups should also be involved in setting up food courts in which traditional millets should be accorded priority. Honey production should also be especially encouraged through Vasantotsav, he said. Priority should be accorded to women for setting up stalls based on flowers and agricultural activities, he added.
Officials informed that competitions will be organised in 15 categories in Vasantotsav. Bands of the ITBP, IMA, PAC, Scouts and Guides, and Home Guards will also perform during the event. The Culture department will organise performances by artistes to depict the rich folk culture of the State. It was stated that for the first time in Vasantotsav, hydroponic cultivation will be included in the exhibition.
