India’s first grass conservation area got established on Sunday when Chief Conservator of Forests Sanjiv Chaturvedi inaugurated it at Ranikhet, Uttarakhand. About 95 species of grass of aromatic, medicinal and religious nature have been accomodated in the area. These species are helpful in absorbing carbon from trees. Some of the species prove to be of great importance like the Tiger Grass which is a good source of self employment. Other grass species like Napier, Kumeria, Barley, Maize, Oat, Paddy, etc are equally important. The grass zone in Ranikhet will play an important role in conducting the study and research of different varieties of grass which are important for human life and environment.
Chaturvedi said that the grasslands can absorb more carbon as compared to trees and that it proves to be a milestone in land and water conservation. He further pointed out all these species prepare the ground for developing the forest by recycling organic and mineral materials and more the grass area, the better will be the environment.
