Ranipokhri bridge breaks on Doon-Rishikesh highway

Two portions of the Ranipokhri bridge across the Jakhan river on the Dehradun-Rishikesh highway collapsed on Friday. Though no loss of life was reported in the incident, some vehicles were damaged and this route between Dehradun and Rishikesh has been closed by the authorities. Traffic has been diverted via the Nepali Farm route. Stretches of roads in various parts of the state were also reported to have been damaged considerably due to landslides and erosion following heavy rains on Thursday night.
Apart from the Ranipokhri bridge, a section of the Maldevta-Sahastradhara link road was washed away by the river in spate and a landslide on the road to Mussoorie disrupted traffic for a considerable time. In Tehri district, a portion of the national highway 94 was washed away while debris also blocked the highway on other spots. The district administration has closed the stretch of this highway from Narendranagar to Chamba considering public safety. A number of roads were reported to be blocked in various districts of the state.
Meanwhile, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the Maldevta area in Dehradun to inspect the damage caused to the road. He issued necessary instructions to the officials accompanying him.
