PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Haridwar

During a special ration card verification drive in Haridwar district, action was taken against a large number of ineligible and fraudulent beneficiaries. So far, 462 ration cards have been cancelled, the district administration officers said, adding that 2,202 units have also been terminated.

The district supply officer stated that several cases have been reported from areas bordering Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh in which several families were found obtaining and using ration cards in both states and receiving double benefits from a number of public welfare schemes.  “A special verification drive is being conducted under the direction of the district magistrate Mayur Dixit to identify those who are fraudulently availing schemes in two states at the same time,” he added.

Under the drive, a total of 20,861 ration cards have been physically verified from April 28 to June 8.  “We have also found cases of individuals receiving benefits from government schemes despite being financially well-off. We are deleting names of the deceased card-holders, too,” the officer stated.

The district administration affirms that this drive will continue to make the ration system more transparent and effective. “Through verification, it is being ensured that the benefits of government schemes reach only genuine and eligible beneficiaries. The DM has instructed the officials concerned to expedite the drive and take strict action if any irregularities are found,” a senior district supply officer said.
