The internal divisions in Uttarakhand Congress and the pain of the senior leaders from an unexpected debacle in the Assembly elections of 2022 come to fore every now and then. In a latest expression of these traits, the former Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Pritam Singh has said that the situation of the Congress party would have been different had the young leaders been given a chance earlier. He was responding to the recent statement of former chief minister Harish Rawat that the young leaders should be promoted in the Congress party. Singh said that Harish Rawat is a very senior leader of Congress party and his statement about young leaders is appreciable. He however added that it should have been done earlier and said that Rawat is saying the right thing though belatedly. The comment of Chakrata MLA and senior leader Pritam Singh is being viewed as his frustration against Harish Rawat who did his best to project himself as the chief ministerial face of the party in the last year’s assembly elections. The camp followers of Pritam Singh also blame Rawat for removal of their leader from the key position of PCC president before the assembly elections.
In a recent post on social media Rawat said that he has been in active politics from the last 58 years and will soon complete 75 years of age. “58 years is a long period and it is enough for whatever one can do so that others can come forward to give their contribution. It is a matter of satisfaction that Congress is in a satisfactory condition in terms of leadership. Yashpal Arya, Pritam Singh, Karan Mahara, Ganesh Godiyal and Prakash Joshi are leading personalities as leaders of future,’’ he said.
In his post Rawat expressed his desire to work for shaping the new leadership in the party now.
