Real-time monitoring of substations to end tripping

With the successful implementation of the Real Time Data Acquisition System (RT-DAS) control system, all the substations will be monitored in real time to prevent tripping issues, the managing director of the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) Anil Kumar Yadav said. He said that the power distribution system is being strengthened and modernised under the RDSS scheme by UPCL. The installation of the RT-DAS control system is underway at 201 substations across the State, specifically those servicing areas with populations of less than 25,000. Since the tender was awarded for the system’s installation, the survey work has been completed and the system has been installed on 180 feeders of 19 substations, he said.
With the implementation of RT-DAS, junior engineers will receive SMS alerts in case of the feeder tripping. If the number of trippings exceeds a prescribed threshold, the concerned senior officers will also be notified. Additionally, better monitoring at all levels will help maintain a strong power system. He further said that timely maintenance of breakers based on the number of trippings will help avoid power disruptions in emergencies.
It will be recalled that earlier, the UPCL had been using the RT-DAS control system at 106 substations in 66 cities across the state under the IPDS scheme. The information collected through RT-DAS is sent to the National Power Portal in real time and is provided to the nodal agency. RT-DAS has also been integrated with the call centre, allowing Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) to receive accurate information about feeder outages and provide prompt updates to consumers.
