The rebels of both Congress and BJP can derail the chances of the official candidates of the two major political parties in many constituencies in the upcoming assembly elections. The senior leaders of both the parties were able to persuade some rebel candidates to withdraw from the contest in some constituencies but there are about 18 constituencies where the rebels of these parties can damage the prospects of the official candidates.

On the last date of withdrawal of the nomination the Congress party was able to persuade former minister Surveer Singh Sajwan to withdraw in favour of official candidate Jayendra Ramola in Rishikesh assembly constituency. To assuage the hurt pride of the senior leader the Congress made Sajwan the working president of the party. He was also made the co chairman of the election campaign committee in Garhwal division. However despite all efforts the Congress leadership was not able to manage the rebellion of Sandhya Dalakoti in Lalkuan assembly. Dalakoti was the official candidate of the party in Lalkuan in the first list but in the second list the party decided to field former chief minister Harish Rawat from here. Similarly former cabinet minister and Congress leader Matbar Singh Kandari is in fray as an independent candidate in Rudraprayag constituency.  The Congress would have to face the rebellion of Sanjay Negi in Ramnagar, Bhim Lal Arya in Ghansali and Bhairav Singh in Bageshwar assembly constituencies.

If Congress is facing the rebellion in six assembly constituencies the problems of ruling BJP is more complex since in 12 assembly segments  the BJP rebels are still in fray.

Despite all efforts the BJP leadership could not persuade former MLA Rajkumar Thukral to withdraw from the contest in favour of the official candidate of the party in Rudrapur. Similarly Dhirendra Panwar in Kotdwar, Jitendra Negi in Doiwala, Dinesh Rawat in Dehradun Cantt,  Vir Singh Panwar in Dharampur, Tika Prasad Maikhuri in Karnprayag, Manoj Shah in Bhimtal, Darshan Lal Arya in Ghansali, Manoj Koli in Yamunotri, Kamlesh Bhatt in Chakrata and Ajay Tiwari in Kiccha are in the fray against the official candidates of BJP.
