A recently married pregnant woman was allegedly killed by her husband on Wednesday night in Rispana Nagar under the Nehru Colony police station area of Dehradun. She was two months pregnant. Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s brother, the police have registered a case against the husband and four of his family members. The Nehru Colony police arrested the accused husband on Thursday and plan to produce him in the court on Friday.
The victim’s brother, Salman Asif, a resident of Rudraprayag, filed a complaint stating that his sister Kahkasha Alam was married to Shahbaz Alam, a resident of Rispana Nagar, Dehradun, on November 19, 2025. Shahbaz Alam works as a lab technician in Dehradun. It is alleged that after the marriage, Kahkasha was continuously harassed by her in-laws over dowry demands.
According to the police, the main accused Alam was unhappy with his wife because the marriage was against his wishes. He was also dissatisfied as his wife was not well educated and her family had given a ‘meagre” dowry. Police said he was not happy after the marriage and had been planning for about a week to kill his wife so that he could remarry and get more dowry. Meanwhile, his wife Kahkasha had fallen ill and was receiving treatment at a hospital.
During interrogation Alam told the police that on March 3 he smothered her with a blanket while she was sleeping, which led to her death. After the incident, the accused and his family took her to Mahant Indiresh Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The victim’s family members said that on the night of February 18 Kahkasha called her brother and told him that her in-laws were demanding Rs 50 lakh to buy a plot on Sahastradhara Road and were troubling her for money. On March 3 at around 11 AM, she again called and said that her husband, parents-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law were very angry and were pressuring her for money. Later that night, at about 1:30 AM, her father received a call from her father-in-law Yaseen saying that something had happened to Kahkasha.
The victim’s family has accused her husband, mother-in-law Khurshida, father-in-law Yaseen, brother-in-law Sartaj and sister-in-law Shabnam of harassing her for dowry and murdering her.
Superintendent of police (City) Pramod Kumar said that based on the complaint of the victim’s brother, a case has been registered against all five accused and that the husband has been arrested. The post-mortem has been completed and the body has been handed over to the family. Police are continuing the investigation into the case.
