REEL trying to use locals’ protest for its advantage?

Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited (REEL) which currently manages door to door collection in 69 wards and operation of Sheeshambada solid waste management and recycling plant is also allegedly trying to use locals’ protest to pressurise the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) and the state government to approve their proposal of setting up a waste to energy plant. REEL has given a notice to MCD stating it will cease the work in the city after August 31 purportedly due to clashes on certain points including less and irregular payments from MCD.
However, the MCD officials have stated that the company was asked to improve its services and take necessary action to dispose of heaps of garbage and refuse derived fuel (RDF) mounted in the plant before any raise in the rates of their services. As per the official sources, the company seeks approval of its proposal to establish a waste to energy plant in Sheeshambada as a main condition to continue its work but the MCD has already floated tenders to appoint a new company to manage sanitation facilities. The official sources informed that REEL is also trying to take advantage of the protest of Sheeshambada’s locals into pressurising the officials concerned to get approval for the waste to energy plant as it will resolve the issue of the disposal of RDF to a great extent. Moreover, officials have stated that there is a possibility that REEL would continue working for MCD from the next month resolving the said issues but even if it does not, MCD is gearing up to replace it with a new company, preferably a local one.
