The country lost one of the most celebrated sound recording artists of Indian cinema BK Chaturvedi on Friday who had a very special connection to Uttarakhand, especially with Nainital. He was in charge of the sound studio of the legendary Indian film director and producer BR Chopra and has left a legacy of his work that he started in 1970. He rerecorded films of several prominent filmmakers like Mrinal Sen, Gulzar, Subhash Ghai, Rajkumar Santoshi, Rajiv Rai and David Dhawan. The last film of the filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee was also rerecorded by him. Besides Hindi, he also mixed films in several languages like Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Nepali and Bhojpuri.
Talking about his work and connection to the State, movie buff and researcher Manoj Panjani said that Chaturvedi has worked in about 1,000 movies during his four-decade-long career. Since his father was posted as a medical officer in Nainital, Chaturvedi did his schooling there.
He said that according to him, Nainital is the best lake in the world and even Geneva or Dal lakes stand nowhere in front of it.
Panjani said that Chaturvedi revisited Nainital in 1982 when he was on his way to Almora to shoot a documentary but his heart sank observing several cars parked on the Mall Road. Chaturvedi stated that the air did not feel the same to him as it did in his school days. Panjani said that he was a great artist who will be remembered for generations to come for his work in Indian cinema.
