Children rescued from beggary and child labour are now receiving technical and music education at the State’s first intensive care shelter in Dehradun. The shelter, located at Sadhuram Inter College, has been developed under a microplan initiated by Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal. The plan focuses on integrating these children into the mainstream through basic literacy, digital education, music, yoga and other activities.
Bansal informed that each day, 25 to 30 children attend classes at the shelter. They include children rescued from streets as well as those referred from institutions and homes. He said that to support their learning, computer and music rooms have been set up and are now operational. These spaces allow children to explore digital tools and musical instruments alongside their regular studies. Bansal stated that specialised teachers are providing instruction in areas such as yoga, sports, performance arts and computer literacy. Volunteers and experts are also involved in supporting the children’s educational and skill development.
The shelter offers classrooms, regular health checkups and daily meals to ensure the children’s basic needs are met. The DM said that the goal of the shelter is to spark interest in education among rescued children and create an environment where they can transition into the formal education system. The initiative continues to expand as more children join and the efforts are focused on building a consistent and supportive routine for their future development, he added.
