Remaining trapped in the collapsed Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi district for a fortnight has eventually proved to be a blessing in disguise for 24-year-old Pushkar Singh of Champawat district. Immediately after the evacuation, Pushkar along with other stuck labourers underwent through medical examination at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh and here the doctors found he has a congenital heart disease. After an open- heart surgery in the premier public health facility on December 28 last, Pushkar on being discharged from the hospital is now a healthy youngster.

By conducting an echocardiography test, cardiologist Barun Kumar had detected the hole in his heart. This heart problem could have been from his birth but he had been unaware about it, the doctors who conducted the surgery said. The senior CTVS surgeon at AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr Anshuman Darbari said that at the time of his earlier discharge on December 1, Pushkar was not found physically and mentally fit enough for this major surgery. “An open- heart surgery of Pushkar was done on December 28 2023 which was successful. If he had not been operated, he could have faced serious consequences later in his life,’’ Dr Darbari said.
