Research, AI & drone technology key for growth of the State: Governor

The governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh said that the State should move forward on the path of development with the help of technology, research, artificial intelligence and drone technology.

 He was addressing the ninth convocation ceremony of Uttarakhand Open University, Haldwani on Saturday.

The governor said that India can set new records through knowledge and science. He said that he is very happy that the number of girl students receiving degrees in the convocation ceremony is more than boys.  This shows that the government’s resolution of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ is being reflected as an achievement. He said that the way girls are achieving success today, India is moving towards becoming a developed nation in the year 2047.

Uttarakhand Open University has also designed many of its courses according to the needs of the state. In these courses, students are studying the historical-cultural and literary heritage of the state of Uttarakhand. The university has taken initiatives in every field according to the needs of the state.

The Governor said that the Open University has provided opportunities to many people who could not pursue formal education, who wanted to enhance their academic qualifications, and who wanted to study for self-enrichment and advancement of knowledge. The Open University has made higher education accessible to the masses and people from different age groups, including teenagers and working adults, have benefited from this education system. Distance learning has played a commendable role in increasing the reach of higher education. The University has played a vital role in providing higher education opportunities to students from remote areas, rural areas and economically weaker backgrounds.
He said that education is not the accumulation of knowledge and information. The governor exhorted the students to recognize their potential and self-confidence.

In his address, secretary Higher Education, Ranjit Kumar Sinha said that Uttarakhand is the first state in the country to implement the New Education Policy (NEP-2020). He said that people associated with the field of higher education should constantly keep in mind the needs of the time, considering the totality and various dimensions of education and focus on how the all-round development of society, state and nation can be done through education.

Addressing the programme, Vice Chancellor Om Prakash Singh Negi said that Uttarakhand is offering 94 courses under 14 branches. He said that various skill and employment-oriented programs are being conducted in the university. He said that the university has adopted five villages under which many works related to education and computer awareness are being done in the adopted villages.
