Rising leopard movement, attack on boy raises concern in Nainital

Wednesday, 07 February 2024 | PNS | NAINITAL

The movement of leopards and human-leopard conflict in Nainital city and nearby areas has become a cause of concern for the local residents. Leopard sightings have been reported regularly during the late evening in the Charlton Loge area of Mallital in recent days.

On Monday late evening, a 17-year-old boy was attacked by a leopard in the Motapani area of Krishnanagar. The boy is reported to have sustained injuries in the leopard attack. The local forest ranger Pramod Kumar Tiwari said that he came to know about the incident from newspapers, adding that patrolling will be stepped up in the area. The disruption of regular electricity supply in the area enhances conditions for human-leopard conflict. Though the boy survived the leopard attack with injuries, the incident has created an atmosphere of fear in the area.

The locals state that electricity supply in the area has been disrupted for two days, which may have created conducive situations for the leopard to attack the boy. The leopard ran away after locals nearby made noise.
