The increasing number of road accidents has taken the form of an epidemic. Padma Shri recipient and orthopaedic surgeon Dr BKS Sanjay said this while speaking at a road safety awareness programme in Graphic Era Hill University on Thursday.
Dr Sanjay said that despite all efforts, 400 people become victims of premature death every day due to road accidents. He stressed on the need for raising awareness, following traffic rules and other necessary measures to prevent road traffic accidents.
Dehradun superintendent of police (Traffic) Akshay Konde said that rash driving and violation of traffic rules are the major reasons for road accidents. Riders not wearing helmets and drivers not wearing seat belts exacerbate the damage from such accidents. He encouraged the students to do volunteer work with the traffic police.
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Gaurav Sanjay gave a video presentation on road safety while the university’s vice chancellor J Kumar also expressed his views on the occasion. After the programme, the students took out a silent rally to spread the message of road safety.
