Congratulating Ritu Khanduri on her election as speaker of Uttarakhand assembly, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that history has been created as she is the first woman speaker of the state. He said that the women played an important role in the statehood movement. The CM said that Khanduri with her background is the best choice for the speaker. Senior leader of the Congress party and MLA from Chakrata Pritam Singh said that he is confident that she would run the house efficiently with support of all members. He said that the Uttarakhand assembly should pass a resolution in support of 33 per cent reservation for women in the legislative bodies. Cabinet minister Satpal Maharaj said that the election of Khanduri is honour of women of the state. Congress leader Yashpal Arya said that Khanduri would take the legacy of her father Major General (retd) BC Khanduri forward. Cabinet minister Dhan Singh Rawat said that the assembly of Uttarakhand has witnessed three historic occasions, the first when Prakash Pant was elected as youngest speaker, the second when Yashpal Arya was elected as first Dalit speaker and now the third when Khanduri has got elected as first women speaker. Other members of the house also congratulated Khanduri on her election.
