A river ranching programme was organised at Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh as part of which 1.1 lakh fingerlings were released into the river on Thursday. This programme was held under the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) scheme in the presence of the Rishikesh municipal commissioner Shailendra Singh Negi as the chief guest. He informed that as part of the Central government’s Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and NFDB, authorities concerned are making efforts to promote the conservation and development of fish species in the Ganga river. Major Indian carp species such as Rohu, Catla and Mrigal are being stocked in the river as part of these efforts. This initiative not only increases the fish population but also helps maintain aquatic balance in the river ecosystem, he stated. The commissioner said that the collective initiative is instrumental in promoting sustainable fisheries and preserving the aquatic environment of the Ganga. The stocking of these fish fingerlings will contribute to increasing the fish population in the river while also supporting ecological balance. Through such initiatives, the government aims to encourage fish conservation, improve livelihoods for those dependent on fishing and promote the sustainable use of aquatic resources. Besides Negi, the president of the Ganga Sabha and officials and staff from the Fisheries department were also present at the event.
