The Joshimath-Malari state highway which leads to the Indo-China border area has not yet been reopened for traffic 12 days after it was blocked by debris in Chamoli district. The army, Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and residents of the border area are using the alternative bridle path while the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working to reopen the highway.
This important road was blocked by landslide between Suraithota and Tamak on August 14 which has also disrupted electricity supply to 14 villages in the border region. Reaching Joshimath from Dronagiri, the Gram Pradhan Rudra Singh said that many of the villagers are unwell.
There is an ANM centre at Ruving but that is locked. The sub divisional magistrate Kumkum Joshi said that communications have been restored till Malari while the ANM and pharmacist have been directed to reach their post in Dronagiri. Meanwhile, Thakur Singh Rana continued his hunger strike unto death for the third day on Wednesday demanding improvement of facilities in the border areas. He was later taken to the community health centre after his condition deteriorated.
