Decisions on accessible & affordable public transport likely to be taken in meeting

The Transport department will conduct the meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) on December 23. This will be the RTA’s last meeting of the year which will be chaired by Garhwal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey.

In this meeting, the officials concerned will take decisions related to providing basic facilities like accessible and affordable public transport system to the residents of semi-rural areas, the secretary of RTA Sunil Sharma said. He said that the Dehradun division’s Regional Transport Office (RTO) will present a proposal for starting the operation of mini buses on the routes that are not connected to the main city area in the meeting. Sharma said that the transport department has made considerable changes in local public transportation in Dehradun this year.

The department had prepared a three-tier plan to facilitate public transport in semi-rural areas and internal routes of Dehradun to provide an easy and efficient way for people to access public transportation. As part of this plan, the department will first connect all routes of remote areas with the main city as many have to change multiple vehicles to reach the city area on a daily basis. He said that the department aims to provide accessible and affordable public transportation facilities to all localities and settlements in the Dehradun district and important decisions will be taken to achieve this in the RTA meeting.

Sharma said that the RTA will also take some decisions that will give locals employment opportunities too. Besides this, several other proposals will also be presented in the meeting regarding the Public transportation system in the Dehradun division of the department. He said that any applicant can also plead his/her case in the meeting itself or through their advocate before the Garhwal commissioner.
