RTO collects Rs 1.40 crore penalty in a month

The regional transport office of the Dehradun division collected a penalty of Rs 1.40 crore by imposing over 6,000 challans last month for various violations. These penalties were imposed in seven areas that fall under the division which include Dehradun, Vikasnagar, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Roorkee, Tehri and Uttarkashi, said the regional transport officer (Enforcement) Shailesh Tiwari. He told The Pioneer that the enforcement team had imposed a total of 3,698 challans in May last year and seized a total of 162 vehicles and collected a penalty of Rs 1.23 crore. 

In May this year, the team imposed a total of 6,642 challans and seized 253 vehicles and collected a penalty of more than Rs 1.40 crore, added Tiwari. “Comparing the data of RTO of May 2022 and 2023, there is nearly 79 per cent increase in challans, over 56 per cent increase in the number of vehicles seized along with 40 per cent increase in penalty collection,” he said. He stated that the RTO issued 874 challans in Dehradun and 1,105 in Rishikesh in May 2022 and in May 2023, 2,154 challans were issued in Dehradun and 1,460 in Rishikesh. Besides this, 547 challans were issued in Vikasnagar, 388 in Haridwar, 348 in Roorkee, 188 in Tehri and 248 in Uttarkashi in May 2022 but the number of challans issued last month increased considerably- 921 in Vikasnagar, 599 in Haridwar, 772 in Roorkee, 201 in Tehri and 535 in Uttarkashi, claimed Tiwari.

He said that the RTO also used its task force and bike squad in all these areas to minimise accidents and ensure traffic rules are being followed. He said that during the checking campaign, the teams also took action against 144 vehicles for overloading, 120 drivers talking on mobile phones while driving, and 80 goods vehicles carrying passengers among others.
