Acting on the pleas of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on fuel conservation and environmental protection, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Dehradun has directed all its officers and staff members to use public transport for commuting to the office every Thursday.

Officials from the department informed that this initiative aims to enhance the public transportation system while contributing to fuel conservation and reducing traffic congestion.

Notably, since the World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, all officers and staff at the RTO will be availing public service vehicles for their commutes every Thursday. The primary goal is to conduct a reality check on public transportation services and alleviate some of the vehicular pressure on the roads, the officials said, adding that feedback from the staff will help identify and rectify any deficiencies and irregularities found in public service vehicles.

The officials further informed that a ‘car pool’ system would be implemented, allowing employees from nearby locations to coordinate their travel to the office each day.  “This direction also includes a Google Sheet that should be created for collecting feedback at the office level. Based on this feedback, necessary improvements will be made to address any identified issues with public service vehicles,” a senior RTO officer said.

The officials also stated that if any violations of traffic rules are reported such as overloading, overcharging drivers using mobile phones while driving, or any other traffic infringements, appropriate enforcement action will be taken by the officers concerned.
