Sends recommendations to executive agencies to minimise accident risk

After inspecting the accident site in Mussoorie where five college students died on Saturday, the regional transport office of the Dehradun division sent recommendations to the Road Safety Committee and the Road Safety Lead Agency with the aim to minimise the accident risk at the site. A team led by the regional transport officer (Enforcement)  Shailesh Tiwari reached the accident site and found that there was a bend and slope on the road at the accident site. The width of the paved portion of the road is approximately 14.5 feet and the total width of the road is 19 feet. There is a slope on the left side of the accident site and a hill on the right side. The team observed a parapet wall built at the accident site. A portion of the wall was damaged at the place where the vehicle fell, which may have been damaged after the accident. The team also inspected the vehicle which was completely damaged in the accident. The RTO said that it was concluded after the inspections of the accident site and the vehicle that the driver possibly could not control the vehicle due to the sharp turn and slope. Due to this, the vehicle broke the parapet wall on the left side of the road and fell down the road below and crashed, Tiwari said. He stated that based on the inspection, he has made some suggestions and recommendations to the executive agencies, District Road Safety Committee and Road Safety Lead Agency to prevent or minimise the risk of accidents at the site in future. He suggested the agencies concerned to install delineators on the side of the road at the accident site and repair the damaged parapet wall. A strong parapet wall acts as a barrier between the road and the adjacent hill slope which prevents vehicles veering off the road and falling down the slope. The warning boards signifying ‘Accident Prone Area, ‘Sharp Turn’ and ‘Go Slow’ must also be installed at the site for drivers and tourists. It is important to take these steps to ensure such tragic accidents do not occur in future, Tiwari said. Five college students met a tragic end when the SUV they were travelling in fell off the road near Mussoorie on Saturday. The group had gone on a trip to Mussoorie and returning when the accident occurred. The victims have been identified as Aman Singh Rana (22) from Sahaspur, Dingyash Pratap Bhati (23) from Haridwar, Hridyansh Chandra (24) from Uttar Pradesh, Ashutosh Tiwari (23) from Uttar Pradesh and Tanuja Rawat (22) from Haridwar. The injured Nayanshri (24) from Meerut was seriously injured and is currently being treated in a private hospital.
