RTO intensifies drive against traffic violations

Friday, 25 February 2022 | PNS | Dehradun

The enforcement team of Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Dehradun has intensified its drive to check overloading at entry points of the district besides checking traffic violations in the accident-prone areas.

The regional transport officer (Enforcement) Sunil Sharma informed that eight teams have been formed to check irregularities under the drive within the cities and the entry points to the district. He said that besides checking overloading in the vehicles entering the district during night and early morning, the enforcement teams also ensure no vehicle enters the district without paying required taxes. Since irregularities in tax payments through vehicles entering the state have already caused considerable financial loss to the transport department, Sharma said that the teams ensure every eligible vehicle operator entering the district pays the due taxes. Besides this, the RTO has also deployed enforcement teams in the accident-prone areas like the stretches of Miyanwala, Shimla Bypass, Raipur stadium route and near Saharanpur Road which are more vulnerable to accidents mainly due to overspeeding, added Sharma. He said that enforcement teams are also using six Interceptors and radar guns that measure the speed of the moving vehicle to take action against the traffic rules violations. He said, “We are mainly focusing on taking action against overspeeding on the vulnerable main routes during the busy hours when most of the people potentially violate the rules. The RTO is taking action against about 130 vehicle operators on a daily basis for violations like overspeeding and riding without helmets. The teams are also seizing vehicles on a daily basis. In the past one week, we have taken action against about 1,000 persons.” Besides this, the transport officer also informed that the department is also considering the installation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to monitor the situation in the accident-prone areas across the district. At present, the teams are working on various factors like cost effectiveness of the project and seamless integration of the softwares of ANPR and the department. However, the final decisions will be taken after the formation of the new state government, added Sharma.
