The regional transport officer (administration) Sunil Sharma said that the transport department has been making efforts to promote clean-fuelled public transport vehicles to minimise air pollution in cities as per the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
The initiatives are being taken to ensure public transport vehicle operators operate clean-fuelled vehicles in Dehradun after which the RTO plans to implement the plan in Rishikesh, Haridwar and all major cities of the division comprising Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Uttarkashi districts. He said that the department is also working on a plan to convert existing vehicles into electric vehicles or CNG-fuelled vehicles to strengthen the public transport system at local level without affecting the environment. He said that the department has also started raising awareness among locals about using clean-fuelled two-wheelers and cars in Dehradun for a sustainable environment.
The RTO is also working on ensuring effective enforcement of rules especially regarding pollution checking of public transport vehicles. The department will soon form a special task force consisting of officials concerned to check vehicular pollution in Dehradun and to take action against violators accordingly.
