In breaking news from Uttarakhand, the Supreme Court has turned down a petition for urgent hearing of the case related to the Mahapanchayat called by some militant Hindu outfits scheduled on June 15 in Uttarakhand’s Purola town where communal tension has been prevailing for some time over alleged love jihad incidents. The Apex Court has said that the petitioners should approach the High Court first as law and order is for the administration to handle. Notably, the Uttarakashi district administration has already denied permission for the holding of the Mahapanchayat.
It may be mentioned here that Delhi University professor Apoorvanand and poet Asok Vajpeyi wrote to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court D Y Chandrachud, appealing for the court’s intervention in stopping the Mahapanchayat in the interest of communal harmony in the State.
