In latest news from Uttarakhand, a youth from the Scheduled Castes was fined by the panchayat for refusing to play dhol at a religious congregation held on the occasion of Baisakhi in May. This happened at a village in Joshimath block under Chamoli district. After the matter reached the police station, a case under the SC/ST Act was filed against 28 persons from a particular caste of the village.
As per the police, Pushkar Lal who was to play dhol at the religious function refused owing to ill health and then he was fined. Not just that, he and his near ones were asked not to collect water from the village water source.
The villagers from the caste the accused belonged to admitted that Lal had been fined for refusing to play dhol during the religious function but the charge of theirs being prevented from drawing water from the village source is baseless.
