In an attempt to dispose of heaps of refuse derived fuel (RDF) accumulated in the solid waste management and recycling plant in Sheeshambada for years, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has approached the scientists of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee to recommend a scientific solution to the problem.
A team of experts is expected to visit the waste management plant within a week to assess and analyse the situation caused by 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of RDF, said the Dehradun municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal. He said that the corporation is making efforts to dispose of the heaps of RDF as soon as possible. The RDF has accumulated there in the past six years due to the failure of Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited (REEL) to dispose of it on time.
The plant was meant to process the RDF and garbage for 15 years but was filled in just four years by a massive mound of RDF and unprocessed garbage due to REEL’s failure. Local organisations and public representatives have also been protesting against it for many years due to the nuisance caused to local residents.
He said that the corporation has been trying to remove the heaps of RDF for a long time and there is a strong possibility of getting success with the help of the scientists from IIT this time. He said that the team is expected to visit the waste management plant in Sheeshambada within a week. They will give their report to the MCD within a few days after completing their visit on the basis of which, the sanitation team will formulate a strategy to tackle the issue, added Goyal. He said that MCD has also sent a proposal to the State government to dispose of the RDF. All these steps are expected to speed up the disposal process of RDF in Sheeshambada, added Goyal.
