SCPCR directs ARTO to crack down on helmetless students

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Geeta Khanna issued strict directives to the additional regional transport officer after noting schoolchildren riding two-wheelers in their school uniforms sans helmets.

She said that during her inspection on Monday, she had observed firsthand that students were taking their two-wheelers from the school parking lot and riding them without helmets in violation of the rules. “This poses a safety threat to the children,” she noted with concern.

“The commission directed that responsibility be assigned to parents and the accountability of the school management concerned must also be ensured. If a minor student is found driving without a helmet or violating any rules, punitive action should be taken in accordance with the regulations. We will not compromise even a littleddn when it comes to the safety of children,” she said, adding that the ARTO has been directed to conduct special inspection campaigns around schools and to report the actions taken to the commission.
