SCPCR holds meeting on illegal operation of madarsas in Dehradun

The chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), Geeta Khanna asked the Madarsa Education Board to provide an updated list of registered madarsas in Dehradun district and whether children studying there are enrolled in regular schools too. She also asked for a detailed report about the provision for residential facilities in madarsas, a list of children studying in these madarsas and details of the hostel facilities available for them. Khana further sought information about the designated hours of study in the madarsas. She stated this in a meeting organised by SCPCR on Tuesday which was attended by the officials from the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), Madarsa Education Board and child psychologist Nishat Iqbal, among others, to address the issue of illegal madarsas operating in Dehradun district. Khanna asked MDDA to provide a report on the construction conditions and regulations for hostel buildings in schools and madarsas. She also instructed them to provide a detailed report to the commission on schools operating without proper approval on agricultural land in the Vikasnagar. She also asked the officials to investigate the legitimacy, recognition and proposed legal status of a madarsa located in Azad Colony and submit a detailed report. Khanna also expressed disappointment on the absence of the several key officials, including the director of Primary Education, the deputy registrar and the chief medical officer of Dehradun district among others. She said that the commission will send letters to these departments concerned and asked them to attend the next scheduled meeting.
