SCPCR to start drive to check children homes & orphanages in State
commission would also write to the state education department to enquire about the action taken by the department so far to ensure the safety of students living in boarding schools. The chairperson of the commission, Usha Negi stated,
“We will ask the education department to provide all the details of all the boarding schools operating in the state. The commission will also analyse what steps the department has taken so far to ensure the implementation of all the protocols inside the school premises as per the norms set by the government.” Negi said that students from across the country stay in the boarding schools of the State and it is the education department’s responsibility to ensure that the boarding school management is following all the protocols to ensure the safety of these students.
Meanwhile, Negi also disclosed that SCPCR will soon commence an inspection drive to monitor the condition of the children in orphanages and children homes across the State. The commission will ascertain the situation in these homes which are being run by government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), revealed Negi.
“While the commission always takes action immediately on any child-related issues, especially from orphanages and children homes, this inspection would help us to understand the situation of children living there. The commission will take action against those who are not taking care of the children as per the norms,” said Negi.
It will be recalled that recently, a 25-year old student allegedly committed suicide in a Rajpur Road situated Buddhist school where a teacher had also committed suicide last year in October. Talking about this, Negi stated that though the victim was not a child, the commission would still write the Dehradun district administration and the police to find out what caused two deaths within a time span of six months as many students there are underage. The officials further informed that the commission would also ask the education department what is being done to monitor the condition of students in such schools across the state.
