In view of frequent cases of tourists drowning in the Ganga river near ghats in Rishikesh, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) started a campaign on Monday to raise awareness among the public. On the first day of the awareness campaign, the SDRF teams raised awareness at Neem Beach and Sachcha Dham Ashram Ghat, Ramjhula Ghat, Janaki Setu, Boat Ghat, Triveni Ghat and all the ghats of Lakshmanjhula. The officials said that the campaign was commenced on the order of the SDRF commandant Manikant Mishra considering the rise in drowning accidents near ghats, especially during the rainy season. The teams told the tourists that caution is the only protection against drowning accidents near ghats. They suggested them not to enter the river directly and stay extremely near the ghat while bathing. If the flow of the river is quite fast, tourists should avoid entering into deep water, especially during the rainy season. They should remain alert towards the rising water level of the river. Tourists should also avoid taking selfies in dangerous or slippery spots near ghats. People must abide by rules if the authorities prohibit entry to some ghats to avoid such drowning accidents. The SDRF teams also appealed to all tourists to follow all the warning boards installed near ghats for safety.
